R.I.P. Carl passed away suddenly at his home on Sunday 20th April 2003.
Carl was one of the most experienced and respected outdoors people in Tasmania, having walked or paddled or climbed just about everything in the state throughout his lifetime of involvement with the Scouting movement, and his various occupations in the State Emergency Service and Army, and as a Teacher of Physical Education, Apple Grower, Recreation Consultant and Planner, Surf Life Saver, Founder of the Tasmanian Canoe Club the list goes on and on He has researched aboriginal sites, explored cave systems, planned slalom courses and sporting complexes. He walked areas of Tasmania that had hardly been trodden on and was guiding people through Tasmania's remote areas long before they had been recognised as National Parks in the days when guiding was a labour of love rather than a profession. Carl’s love of the mountains was matched only by his passion for water sports, which led him firstly to Olympic level as a swimmer, and later to an enviable number of years travelling the world with the Australian White Water Kayaking Team. Carls Law : "Mother Nature rules the mountains - You will only do what she allows" Although he was a romantic and a dreamer, Carl had a very strong Green streak and would not hesitate to tell you how to look after "his" mountains – in fact he was one of the original group of walking companions who decided that the Tasmanian Government had to be challenged over their decision to flood Lake Pedder. That historical occasion set in train the events, which led to the birth of the Wilderness Society and the Green Party in Australia. Carl’s knowledge and love of the outdoors made him perfect as the "resident wise man" of "The Barn". Many people from all over the world visited "The Barn" just to meet Carl and talk with him . and he certainly helped those that did to get the absolute total experience from their trip to Tasmania. ..... he also had the ability to make those that did often feel homesick by his reminiscing with them about the wonderful times he had spent in their own country! Carls Law: " THE MOST EXPERIENCED WALKERS ARE THE ONES THAT ASK THE MOST QUESTIONS" |
