Members of the Launceston Field Naturalists Cub have been
asked repeatedly to recommend a simple illustrated non-technical book for
the identification of wild-flowers in Tasmania. It is to fin this need
that A Guide to Flowers and Plants of Tasmania has been produced
for use by ordinary nature lovers, tourists, bushwalkers and students. The
idea of writing such a book using some of the many excellent slides taken
by present and past members was first put forward by Club President, John
Simmons, under whose guidance the work has proceeded.
It is impossible to feature all the flowering plants - nearly 2000 species are recorded for Tasmania - so a representative sample of those easily seen has been chosen. Many are common and wide spread - others are significant parts of the Tasmanian flora, either confined to Tasmania or examples of genera more richly represented in Tasmania than in other States. Although some are less common than others there is no plant shown which cannot be seen within a half day's walk from a road somewhere in Tasmania and without using a four-wheel-drive vehicle. |
